NANOMYTE® MEND

Self-Healing Coatings

NEI has developed a line of self-healing top coats, where a physical self-healing phenomenon leads to gap closing and crack sealing. The innovative technology platform is applicable to a broad range of substrates, such as metal, wood, and polymers – including those that require maintaining a clear, glossy appearance. NANOMYTE® MEND coatings can be healed multiple times at the same defect location, thereby reducing life cycle costs by increasing the service life and reducing maintenance costs of the various substrates to which it is applied.

Self-Healing Coatings - MEND Chart

MEND Product Sheet »

The MEND coating platform is based on polyurethane, but the principle can be applied to other coating systems as well. The properties of the coating, such as hardness, gloss, and refractive index, can also be altered as needed for a specific application. Features and benefits of the MEND coating line include:

  • Easy Application – Can be applied by spraying, dipping, or brushing
  • Cost Savings – Reduces raw material, labor, and energy cost of repainting or recoating
  • Durability – Increases the service life of coatings by preserving aesthetic and protective functions
  • Environmentally Friendly – Minimizes the environmental costs and societal impact of repainting (e.g., waste disposal and volatile-organic-compound emissions)
  • Reduced Maintenance – Eliminates the need to frequently repaint or replace damaged coatings
  • UV Protection – UVP formula provides protection from the harmful effects of UV radiation

MEND Product Lines

In response to the need for self-healing required in different environments, the NANOMYTE® MEND line of self-healing coatings has been expanded to six different formulations, each with varying temperatures and conditions for curing & self-healing. Select a tab below to learn more.

MEND 1000

NANOMYTE® MEND 1000

Thermal Cure – Thermal Healing

NANOMYTE® MEND 1000 is a thermally-induced, self-healing coating. The 2-part coating involves a unique phase-separated morphology that facilitates the delivery of the self-healing agent to the damage site (such as a scratch or crack) thereby restoring the coating appearance & function. The coating’s self-healing function is activated by the application of a small amount of heat (60 – 80 °C) for several seconds with a simple device, such as a household hair dryer, or even hot water.

Application Instructions:

  1. Combine 1 part (by weight) of Part A with 1 part of Part B (both components are included with purchase)
  2. Mix thoroughly until homogeneous and apply promptly (preferably within 2 hours)
  3. Once applied, transfer coated part to preheated oven within 5 minutes
  4. Recommended curing schedule: 80°C for 15 minutes, followed by 120°C for 1 hour

For complete instructions, please refer to the Technical Data Sheet.

Safety & Handling:

Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used at all times. Provide good ventilation or extraction. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid prolonged or repeated breathing of vapor. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Keep away from heat, sparks, flames and other sources of ignition.

For complete safety information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (Part A) ♦ (Part B)

Available Quantities:

NANOMYTE® MEND 1000 is sold and shipped directly from NEI in liter or gallon quantities (components A & B are included with purchase). Bulk quantities and customized versions of our MEND coatings are also available upon request – please contact us for details. Request a Quote »

MEND 1000-UVP

NANOMYTE® MEND 1000-UVP

Thermal Cure – Thermal Healing – UV Protection

NANOMYTE® MEND 1000-UVP is a thermally-induced, self-healing coating with UV protective properties. When scratched or damaged, the 2-part coating’s self-healing function is activated upon application of a small amount of heat, such as from hot water or a hair dryer, to restore the surface back to its original appearance. MEND 1000-UVP is enhanced with NEI’s UV-Protect (UVP) technology, which blocks UV radiation and protects coated surfaces from the harmful effects of sun and weather exposure. The addition of UVP helps maintain the unique properties of the coating when subjected to long-term outdoor exposure, while preserving the underlying material’s strength, coating adhesion, and appearance.
